In the southern sector of Somontano the scenery is dominated by wide horizons that reveal important prairie eco-systems typical of the Ebro Valley. Between small hillocks and dry, semi-arid canyons there live a number of species perfectly suited to difficult conditions such as drought and extreme temperatures. The Stone Culew(Burhinus oedicnemus), the Pin-tailed Sandgrouse(Pterocles alchata), the Black-bellied Sandgrouse(Pterocles orientalis) and the Little Bustard (Tetrax tetras) all thrive in this area.

The Eurasian Eagle-owl (Bubo bubo) nests on the earthy knolls of rivers such as the Alcanadre and thrives due to the number of dams in the area.

Fields of cereal provide a safe nesting place for Montagu’s Harrier (Circus pygargus) and in the hollows of roofs and walls of farm buildings the Lesser Kestrel (Falco Nauman) finds refuge.
